“Too Involved to Paint My Dress”
A Series

The process I engage in when making art is one of chance, intuition and calculation; sometimes in that order. My work consists mainly of painting, but I also include drawing, design and written word. I unintentionally found the phrase “Too involved to paint my dress” written within previous work I had decided to revisit. The statement jumped out at me and launched this series.

“Too involved to paint my dress” presents the dichotomy of obligation verses choice. The saying is stubborn, yet playful. It pokes fun at the demanding activities we commit ourselves to while compromising personal satisfaction. I believe there needs to be an element of absurdity in order to be open to greater accomplishments.

My work in this series addresses the duality of impulse and calculation by pairing gestural marks with detailed sketches. Both items are deliberate, geometrical details of larger works. My intent is to create a poetic and playful distribution of the two elements either by a direct pairing or by integrating the elements into one field.
