Fish Scales
Detail "Chairs & Scales" 2010
I have recently been finding inspiration on patterns occurring in nature. (Or maybe I have just become more aware of certain patterns I have liked all along). Either way, I am developing a new body of work based on "FIsh Scales". I have been coupling my interest with patterns using some throw-back color palettes of vintage matchboxes. I am not sure how my new research has developed from two seemingly unrelated areas, but let's see how it goes! Go to the Paintings section of my site and click on some of links below "Recent Work" to check it out!
Some Notes on my Process
My subject matter revolves around popular color trends(past and present) and abstracted images. One particular series I worked on a few years ago was based on a simple image of record players. By focusing on the lines and shapes of the design, I was able to produce an entirely new body of work.
I continued to play with the image, first concentrating on line quality and then adding color.

Then, I played with more color, using color palettes found in current magazine advertisements. I use advertisements as color studies for my paintings because they tend to follow the most recent trends in color.
